In certain industries it's expected - finance and banking for example. What lets it all down is when they're spilling out of the pubs in the City on a Thursday evening.

I like suits but it is possible to look very professional in smart in a slightly less formal way.
Yes they look very important and skilled when dressed in a nice clean suit.
