Am I the only self employed tradesman struggling for work at moment?

Resolved Question

Am I the only self employed tradesman struggling for work at moment?

I am a self employed joiner/tiler of 6 years, and am currently really struggling to find any work. I have a 3 month old daughter, and my wife is on maternity leave. I know january is always a slow month, but this one is by far the worst so far. Any ideas or views on the matter?

I am sure that you are by no way the only self employed tradesman struggling at the moment, though it depends upon your trade of course. As times are hard at the moment and with many people being uncertain of the security of their own jobs. there is a substantial down turn in building work of all types, both in new builds and in remedial and renovation work. Many small tradesman have been used to making a decent living through local word of mouth and subbing for a small number of larger business'. As the recession continues to bite - and it is far far from over yet - you may need to use advertising to get your name to a wider potential clientele.

  • I agree. You are going to have to do more for your business then just word of mouth. Try radio, face book, local classifieds etc.. Even with January being a slow month. It is important for you to put yourself out there so more people can know you...
