Go out around town and see where the homes are being built. Find the general contractor and strike up a conversation with him. Quote him your work and ask if he would be interested in letting you wire a couple of houses to see the quality of your work. Basically getting out there and meeting the people who have the work is your best bet and it's relatively cheap, the cost of gas and maybe lunch if someone seems very interested and wants to pursue using you. You could also buy the book Guerrilla Marketing by Jay Levinson. Get your name out there, make it clear you are looking for work, and then when you get it do the best work out there for the most competitive price. Good luck!

- Get your name out into the market place. Get it on the side of your van and have flyers and advertising cards to give out whenever possible. Look at VistaPrint for advertising deals - they give lots of free stuff away and only charge for postage. Try some of the free calendars etc with your company name on, send them to local companies that might need your services. If you're going to be doing private work as well as commercial work then get a small advertising board to display when you're working at a property - it's surprising how much work we get from neighbours when doing a small job at someone's house. Remember that the best recommendation you can get is by word of mouth, so make sure that your work is up to scratch. Always carry a small hoover and basic cleaning mateials to clean up after the work. Always take all the rubbish away - customers hate to be left with a pile of plaster after you've chipped out for trunking! Look for an idea that makes you that little bit better than other companies - 24 hour emergency call-out, oap rate, weekend call-outs etc. Check the local competition and make sure that your rates are competitive. Assess and price your jobs carefully - never have to ask for a bit more for something that you didn't notice or missed off a quote, or you'll never get repeat custom. Keep your eye on the local papers and if there are any local places such as charities, old people's homes, youth groups or any old folks who have property damage then offer your services for free - you can get good publicity from that. I know that sounds a bit mercenary but it happened her just before Christmas when an electrical company carried out free work following malicious damage to a charity shop and they got free publicity in local papers for weeks.
