Can just any business request help from volunteers?

Resolved Question

Can just any business request help from volunteers?

Basically, there is a new business in my local area (Dog Parlour) that is advertising for volunteers. They are asking for help in all areas including administration to customer service to bathing the dogs. They have been doing this for a couple of months. It is only charities/organisations that should be asking for volunteers or can any business do it? Thanks.

Hi!
Legally, I'm not sure whether they are able to ask for volunteers as they are probably obliged to pay minimum wage, but morally, I think it is quite wrong. If they are an established, profit-making business, I think they have a cheek asking for people to give up their time, free of charge, to help them out, as theoretically, they are getting free labour which will ultimately line their own pockets. Different if they are a charity, of course, but from what you say, it doesn't sound as though they are.

  • Hi there.
They usually call them "interns" or "work experience" and offer the chance of future pay, but anybody can do it.
    Cheers, Steve.
