Well you're definitely not too old but hairdressing doesn't sound quite right to me, I don't think it would satisfy your creative side enough and you would have to go to college to train with possibly "bitchy girls", who you'd be less likely to find on an art course. If you're able to go to college, even part-time, more avenues would be open to you if you continued with your art and design to see where that leads. It doesn't matter about your GCSE grades because you are judged on the strength of your portfolio, so you just have to get some drawings and art work together.
If you like working with people and being sociable there are lots of art based careers that might suit you, apart from teaching there are "art in the community" type jobs, there is a booklet called "Art with People" published by AN (Artists Newsletter) which your local library might have or be able to get for you. Otherwise there are things like theatrical make-up, which might tie in with hairdressing more.
If you want to concentrate on the design side, fashion, textiles, interior design etc, you are going to get a lot further in business if you are sociable so that might suit you as well.

  • My daughter started her career as a hair dresser in her 30's. The great thing about it.....you can't stand bitchy girls? Then set up a shop in your home and be your own boss. But, that won't prevent you from bitchy customers, and you will have some. You do something to my hair that I don't like, and I'll be bitchy too. LOL!
  • Hair Dressing may not be a good fit. Maybe look into working for an Art Gallery, digital desktop publishing, teaching art classes, coaching artists, etc....
