What kind of new website would have potential to make money ?

The truth is almost ANY kind of site has the ability to make money, you should develop a website based on anything that you are knowledgeable about, interested in, or trying to learn more about.
A great way to get started is to start a blog using a hosted blog service like http://wordpress.com or http://blogger.com. Then you should just start writing interesting articles and posts that other people would like to read. Once you have a readership monetize the blog by either selling ad space, using a contextual ad service (Google adWords, Yahoo Publisher Network, etc.), or finding a related affiliate offer. It's not hard to find site that do this, for example after a little searching I found this site, http://justfreebusinesscards.com. It is a website that talks about business cards and has Yahoo ads at the bottom of each post. I would suggest you find something more interesting to blog about though. :)
