  • It depends on your local laws, and on the particular store's policies. In many states in the US, the minimum age is 16, or 14 or 15 with a work permit. However, many stores won't hire anyone under 18 or even 21, depending on what they sell (tobacco or alcohol, for instance) and just the individual store's policy. I used to work in a woman's clothing store, and the manager wouldn't hire anyone under 18, and she prefered to hire people who were over 21. This wasn't because of anything we sold, it was just that she believed that teenagers were not mature enough to show up on time, every day, and put in a good day's work. She believed this because of how SHE acted as a teen. So we'd get teens applying, and she'd smile at them and tell them that she'd call if she needed them, and then when they left she'd toss the applications in the trash. Now, if they asked, she'd tell them that she only hired adults. But they had to ask.
  • you have to be 16 yrs old, but your not allowed to sell alcohol, tobacco, fireworks, or flammable items such as lighter gas, lighter fluid etc unless there is a supervisor/manager on the premesis.
